Squirrels love nuts!

Unfortunately, nuts are not the best for a squirrel in rehabilitation.

Squirrels, rats, mice, hamsters and gerbils love the idea of cracking open a tasty nut.  Gnawing on a nut is also great for their continuously growing teeth.  Rehabbers and Pocket Pet parents love knowing they are getting the proper nutrition with a 2:1 calcium/ phosphorus ratio.   It is a win-win!

At the Pocket Pet and The Squirrel, we scoop out the walnuts from the shells and then fill the shells with my nutritious walnut squares and bake to perfection.  

Stuffed 1/2 walnut shells are available for smaller critters that may have difficulty getting into the full nut.  The same nutritious walnut squares are stuffed and baked into ½ the shell.

Each full walnut shell is stuffed with two walnut squares.

Ingredients:

An excellent source of omega 3 & healthy fats-walnuts. Highly digestible soybean meal (dehulled), lower in phosphorus than barley or rice – ground corn, molasses, and wheat germ, lower in sugar and high in fibre - dried beet pulp, calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, high in saponins and polyphenolics that offer anti-arthritis and anti-inflammatory properties and may reduce the odour of waste – dried yucca extract, steel cut oats, free-range eggs.

Squirrels & chipmunks:  1 stuffed walnut shell daily or in place of the “silver squares”.

Pocket pets: 1 stuffed walnut shell to be fed as a treat 1-2 times a week.
